Passion Paths is a new initiative in Latino Studies, started by a faculty member and undergraduate advisor in the department, to demonstrate how students' personal interests and career goals can be applicable to a variety of topics that Latino Studies courses offer. I was approached by the faculty member who came up with the topics and asked to come up with some way that the topics could be turned into promotional assets for advising. The original idea was to emulate the university's "Flag" coding system, which is no longer being implemented, on course flyers that we create each semester. Even without the "Flag" system, we found that these Passion Paths are still a great resource for students' advising discussions and course selections. I created icons that represent each of the eight topics and tied everything together with a prickly pear cactus motif, a statement feature of our office building and a common symbol in Latinx culture. I love how the cactus imagery reinforces how each topic can be independent but also part of a wider opportunity to take courses that examine Latinx culture and communities in a variety of perspectives.
